Due to demand, we have started making our skylight flashings available, by post or courier, in their individual components.

The flashing kit comprises of:

– 1 x top section

– 1 x bottom section

– 2 x side sections

– colour matched rivets

The components are easily put together using standard roofing silicon and a hand riveter, as described in the accompanying fabrication instructions.  

The components are boxed and sent via standard mail or courier. This example is for a Velux® C01 in PaperBark® for a client in Queensland in urgent need of a genuine Colorbond® skylight flashing.

This flashing is for a Velux® FCM2246 in a landscape orientation. We add a lead skirt which is hooked onto a bend we incorporate into the flashing during fabrication.

So you’ve been given all the points to consider when selecting a Velux® skylight window….location, size, opening, etc. But has anyone ever told you what happens on top of the roof? That’s just as important as the skylight itself. 

Skylight windows are held in place by a flashing. These range from plastic units, through to welded and painted steel. The quality and type of material will determine whether your new kitchen skylight turns into a shower with the first winter rains. Our flashings are made from genuine Colorbond® steel only because…well, why would you fix something that doesn’t have the benefits of Colorbond® steel onto a Colorbond® roof?

Whether it’s a single flashing for a small C01 window, to multiple flashings for several FCM & S06 size combinations, we have it covered.

A customer approached us to fabricate a custom flashing in Basalt® for three Velux® FCM2246 windows in a portrait orientation, on a metal deck roof. The spacing between the middle and outer windows were to be constrained to 200mm.

Two Colorbond® sheets are selected, and individual components measured out. A check-measurement is made, and the components cut in accordance with the specifications provided.

Individual components are then bent and folded, and  the three Individual window flashings are fabricated and checked. Sealant is applied between flashing overlapping edges, and colour-matched rivets used for fixing.

The individual flashings are dry-fitted together on a workbench to determine the best location for rivet fixings during installation on the roof.

After pre-drilling the rivet holes, the three components are separated, a final sealant applied and the corners strengthened with our own custom solution.

During this entire process, the protective film is left on the steel, except at joins where sealant is applied or rivets are inserted. This film is only removed once the flashing is installed on the roof, ensuring the top of the flashing is not scratched.

On flat, or low pitched, roofs, separate back-flashings above the window flashing are common….but sometimes we are asked to include them in the actual flashing.

Here we have an unusual flashing in Classic Cream™ for a Velux® FCM2222. The top edge is extended from its usual 300mm length, to 1100mm in length, to serve as an in-built back-flashing.

Sometimes we are asked to customise our flashings to fit particular situations – and we are always happy to oblige!

A customer was in the process of completing a single story extension to an existing two-story home, and wanted to know if the flashings could be modified to allow the windows to sit flush against the two-story building walls.

A Velux® FCM1430 window was to be installed on the roof abutting the wall of two story building, so the flashing required an up-turn so sit flush against the wall.

A Velux® FCM2230 window was also be be installed on the same roof, but abutting two walls, so the flashing required an upturn on two sides to sit flush against these walls.

Today we completed an order for the big-daddy of flashings – the massive Velux® S06! 

This particular flashing is made out of Heritage Galvanised Z600, a double thickness steel with superior weather resistance, with a custom 600mm extended top to serve as a back-flashing. When it’s new, it is a shiny surface, but eventually dulls to a more natural look over time.

In 2018, we were approached to demonstrate the feasibility of fabricating interlocking flashings for several VELUX® S01 skylights on a home in Coromandel Valley, Adelaide. Apparently, this type of flashing had never been attempted before. 

The requirements were to create five interlocking flashings in a portrait arrangement with the following specifications: 

– 0° build-up flashings made from Colorbond® Woodland Grey® 

– 2 x paired flashings and 1 x single flashing interlocked with 65mm spacing between flashings 

– 3 x VELUX® S01 1140x700mm VSE (solar opening) skylights with blackout blinds  

– 2 x VELUX® S01 1140x700mm FS (non-opening) skylights with honeycomb blinds

The flashings were fabricated as single units in the workshop, with a practice install to test the suitability of interlocking. Once we were satisfied, they were delivered to site and installed. The result is a bank of five VELUX® S01 windows which brings much needed daylight into an outdated kitchen. 

We turned what was considered non-practical, into something we do everyday.
